| | | | RECYCLING PROGRAM Recycling of specific items that we use in our campus activities is not a matter of choice … it is the law that we should make every effort to remove these items from our general waste stream because they will not decompose in a landfill in our lifetime (or for several generations to come).
Everyone in the University community should ask themselves some very basic questions when using disposables:
“WHAT, WHEN and HOW DO I RECYCLE?”
Office paper White or color, envelopes, NO staples, clips, shiny paper flyers, magazines.
Glass, plastic, metal containers Jars, bottles, soda cans, plastic containers marked with a #1 or #2 in a small triangle on the bottom are the only plastics to be recycled. Plastic containers/bottles with the #3 - #7 are to be disposed in the trash.
Cardboard Should be clean and dry; no styrofoam inserts, no plastic liners, etc
Newspapers Please call Campus Operations for a pick-up of accumulated papers
Blue Containers Recycling containers have been placed throughout campus buildings and residence halls and are emptied regularly by the custodial staff. It is important NOT to put trash in these containers because non-recyclables mixed in "contaminate” the entire container so that it will have to be disposed as “trash”.
REMEMBER: recyclable items only in recyclable containers.
Non-recyclable items are disposed in the general trash and are incinerated as a source of co-generation of electrical power. The elimination of the recyclable items from this general waste stream will reduce the amount of pollutants generated into our atmosphere and eco-system.
If you have any questions on recycling or are in need of any RECYCLING supplies or containers, please call or e-mail our Manager of Support Services, Ed Dobranksy, x7529. | |
