Letter from the Dean
First of all I want to extend to you my personal congratulations and welcome to our campus community. I do sincerely hope your path over the next four years will be a successful one, filled with the excitement of new learning and new opportunities.
Your college years will present you with important opportunities and significant choices. And, along with the many exciting future-building opportunities that will present themselves, you may also find yourself facing choices that can threaten your success. As you move through your first year at Sacred Heart University, you will be constantly faced with a number of decision making instances that will test your ability to make appropriate choices. They will come in various shapes and forms including areas such as the use and abuse of alcohol, dealing with relationships, and tolerance of others to name a few.
You should know that the abuse of alcohol is so strongly linked with many of the most serious personal traumas, disappointments and failures students experience at college. As a result, it is critical for your success, and health and well-being of our entire campus, that every student is able to thoughtfully consider this issue. For this reason, we require every new incoming Sacred Heart University student to take the online course Alcohol eCHECKUP TO GO for College students. eCHECKUP TO GO helps students monitor drinking patterns, identify significant risk factors, and be familiar with the resources and help available on campus and in our community.
Below are instructions for completing the course:
- You may access the course beginning June 15, 2016.
- The basic alcohol course will take 20-30 minutes to complete.
- You will need to complete the course by August 22, 2016.
- To take the course, you will need a computer with internet access and audio capabilities. If you do not have access to a computer, you can use any publicly available computer with internet access.
- To verify your completion of this program please complete the Verification of Completion form at the end of the eCHECKUP TO GO feedback.
But I don’t drink alcohol! What value is this program to me?
Many of our students do not drink and the majority of those who do, drink in moderation. Our most recent data shows 19% of our students do not drink and 72% who do drink, drink 0-4 drinks on any given occasion (2014 CORE Study Data).
However, it is likely that many of us know someone – a classmate, friend, family member or teammate – who drinks at levels that cause concern. The Alcohol eCHECKUP To GO at Sacred Heart University will allow you to more readily identify key personal risk factors and see specific patterns that can lead to dangerous and destructive drinking. You will learn about the resources available on campus and in our local community to help you help a friend. Having these skills can strengthen your ability to be a caring friend and empower you to help someone you care about.
Thanks again for completing the program and for your commitment to becoming a knowledgeable, compassionate and constructive member of our campus community. We look forward to your arrival and to the beginning of your successful Sacred Heart University academic career.
