Chapter 35: Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance

The Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance program is available to eligible spouses and children of a veteran who has died while on active duty or is permanently and totally disabled as a result of a service-related condition.

Application Process 

Using VA Benefits for the first time:

  • Complete VA Form 22-5490

  • Submit the following forms to the School Certifying Official (SCO) in the Registrar’s Office:
    • Certificate of Eligibility (COE) – The VA will provide this document after you have applied for benefits
    • DD Form 214 – To verify the Serviceperson’s discharge, if applicable

  • Register for courses

Transfer of Benefits from another school:

  • Complete VA Form 22-5495 Request for Change of Program or Place of Training to transfer Benefits to SHU.

  • Submit the following forms to the School Certifying Official (SCO) in the Registrar’s Office:
    • Certificate of Eligibility (COE) – The VA will provide this document after you have applied for benefits
    • DD Form 214 – To verify the Serviceperson’s discharge, if applicable

  • Register for courses

Education Benefits under the Survivors and Dependents Assistance Program

Benefit Payment
Payment is sent directly to the Student from the VA.  Payments are usually sent the first day of the month following the start of courses. Partial months of attendance are pro-rated.
