Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill

The Post 9/11 GI Bill is for qualified Servicepersons with at least 90 days of active service after September 10, 2001 or 30 days continuous if discharged for disability. Student may be eligible for the Yellow Ribbon program

Application Process

Using VA Benefits for the first time:

  • Apply for VA Education benefits through www.vets.gov

  • Complete VA Form 22-1990
  • Submit the following forms to the School Certifying Official (SCO) in the Registrar’s Office:

    • Certificate of Eligibility (COE) – The VA will provide this document after you have applied for benefits

    • DD Form 214 – To verify the Serviceperson’s discharge, if applicable

  • Register for courses

Transfer of Benefits from another school:

  • Complete VA Form 22-1995 Request for Change of Program or Place of Training to transfer Benefits to SHU.

  • Submit the following forms to the School Certifying Official (SCO) in the Registrar’s Office:

    • Certificate of Eligibility (COE) – The VA will provide this document after you have applied for benefits

    • DD Form 214 – To verify the Serviceperson’s discharge, if applicable

  • Register for courses

Education Benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill Program

Tuition and fee payment
Sent directly to the school-Capped at the national maximum rate for a private institution at $22,805.34 for the 2017 - 2018 academic year. Sacred Heart participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program. Serviceperson’s with 100% eligibility may be eligible.

Additional Benefits
Applicable to students eligible at the 100% tier. Benefits less than 100% will be prorated based on eligibility percentage by the VA.

Monthly Housing Allowance
Sent to the student. Based on rate of pursuit calculated by the VA.

Books and supplies stipend
Sent to the student-Yearly stipend of up to $1,000 based on enrollment.
