Chapter 1606: Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve

The Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve is for qualified Servicepersons who have signed a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve signed after June 30, 1985.

Application Process

Using VA Benefits for the first time:

  • Apply for VA Education benefits through www.vets.gov

  • Complete VA Form 22-1990

  • Submit the following forms to the School Certifying Official (SCO) in the Registrar’s Office:

    • Certificate of Eligibility (COE) – The VA will provide this document after you have applied for benefits

  • Register for courses

Transfer of Benefits from another school:

  • Complete VA Form 22-1995 Request for Change of Program or Place of Training to transfer Benefits to SHU.

  • Submit the following forms to the School Certifying Official (SCO) in the Registrar’s Office:

    • Certificate of Eligibility (COE) – The VA will provide this document after you have applied for benefits

  • Register for courses

Education Benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve

Benefit Payment
Payment is sent directly to the Student from the VA on a monthly basis. Payments are usually sent the first day of the month following the start of courses.

Verify Attendance
You must verify your attendance each month you are enrolled in courses. You can verify your attendance in W.A.V.E. Web Automated Verification of Enrollment or by calling the Interactive Voice Response telephone line (IVR) at 1-877-823-2378.
