What many very helpful textbooks label as "Study Skills," I prefer to call "Student Habits" because these are the techniques and strategies that you'll need if you are actually planning to be a college student - not just in name but in reality. Simply put, they are the habits and behaviors that characterize the life of a committed and successful college student. I hope you find this reading helpful whenever you read it, but especially as you encounter first-hand the joys and challenges of college
While there are endless comments we could make about study skills--these "Student Habits" you'll need--I'll stop here with these basics. Check with your academic advisor or stop in at the Learning Center if you'd like more detail about any one of them. Take advantage of the study skills workshops offered by our Learning Center. I hope this section helps you to get off to a good start. We began with commitment and attitude, and I'll end with those two words as well. Those two qualities are the principal assets you bring to the challenge of college; without them, all of the tips and strategies have no foundation. So start now; embrace the challenge of college; and remember that you are in control. Determine to be committed; determine to have a positive and productive attitude. Good luck in your first year.
