GENERAL STUDIES
MAJOR
(TOTAL OF 39 CREDITS)
The General Studies program
is a Baccalaureate Degree program developed specifically for students who are
interested in custom designing their own multidisciplinary curriculum. This kind of program allows a student to
investigate areas of study that best serve his/her life and/or work
situation.
1.
You
have the option of taking 36 credits from at least 2 disciplines within one
broad area of study with no more than 24 credits allowed from a particular
discipline OR.
2.
You
have the option of taking 36 credits from two broad areas of study. In this option, you will take 24 credits
from at least 2 disciplines within a primary area of study, with no more than 18
credits allowed from a particular discipline. You will also take 12 credits from a
secondary area of study.
3.
At
least 50% of the courses in the major must be at the upper division level, as
defined by the respective disciplines.
4.
A 3 credit Capstone Project
course supervised by your Faculty Advisor is required at
the end of the
program to synthesize your learning.
THE AREAS OF
STUDY

Arts
and Humanities - this includes Art, Communications, English, History, Media
Studies, Modern Foreign Language, Music, Philosophy, and Religious
Studies.
2.
Natural Science, Numerical
and Symbolic Reasoning - This includes Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science,
Mathematics, and Physics.
3.
Social Science - This
includes Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Political Science,
Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology.
4.
Professional Studies - This
includes Accounting, Education, Finance, Legal Assistant, and
Management:
PLAN OF
STUDY
As
you develop the particular requirements of your General Studies major you are
asked to formulate a cohesive and comprehensive Plan of Study. This will insure that you pursue a
meaningful program. A sequence of
study will be planned for a year at a time since most general studies students
attend part-time and have a number of transfer credits.
