Summer RA Application Process

Each Summer Resident Assistant, under the direct supervision of the Residence Hall Director will carry out all responsibilities related to housing for Sacred Heart University summer session students, as well as Summer Conferences. Each Summer Resident Assistant is expected to work at least 25 hours per week as part of their Summer Conference and Office of Residential Life duties in addition to serving as on-duty staff. There may be significant weekend and evening work, and fluctuation in the number of hours worked per week should be anticipated. Some weeks will require 40 or more hours of work, while some will require fewer than 20 hours. 

Aside from duty responsibilities a standard week for a Summer Resident Assistant will include two (2) four hour shifts in the Office of Residence Life. This shift will mainly focus on the administrative needs of the department. In addition the Summer Resident Assistant will be responsible for the tracking of maintenance and administrative concerns in one area of the Residence Life Program. If you are working with the students and interns in Christian Witness Commons, you will be responsible for aiding in the administrative responsibilities of the community, as well as a minimum programming requirement aiding in the creation and maintenance of the summer residential community. Summer Resident Assistants are expected to work each First Year Orientation Sessions for move-in and Residential Life Information Sessions.

Summer Resident Assistants are expected to have a positive attitude, willingness to work hard, flexibility to adapt to a varying work schedule, the ability to think and act quickly and intelligently, resourcefulness, the desire and commitment to work as part of a team, and an understanding of, and commitment to, quality customer service.

Requirements:

  • Must be a current undergraduate student
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Must not be on Disciplinary Probation or higher from March 23, 2015 through May 14, 2015

Compensation:

  • $2,000 for new staff, $2,200 for returning staff
  • 1 week vacation during period of employment
  • Meals - while Orientation and summer conferences are in session only
  • Rent-free housing for period of employment

Term of Appointment: 

  • SHU Summer Housing with SHU Students/Interns(5 positions)
    • Thursday, May 21, 2015 to Monday, August 10, 2015

  • Summer I Staff: Camps & Conference (4 positions)
    • Sunday, May 31, 2015 to Sunday, August 16, 2015

  • Summer II Staff: Camps & Conferences (1 position)
    • Sunday, June 6, 2015 to Sunday, August 29, 2015
    • Must work on Saturday, August 28, 2015 in the Office of Residential Life from 8AM to 3PM

Training:

There will be a day of training sessions for all staff on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 from 9:30AM to 4PM.

Position Responsibilities:

The Summer Conference Resident Assistant will perform the following tasks:

Administration

  • Assist in check-ins, check-outs, and key exchanges for Summer Housing and/or Summer Camps & Conferences
  • Address maintenance and facilities needs expeditiously
  • Communicate effectively with Office of Residential Life and Housing Services central office staff, Public Safety, Summer Conferencing supervisors, and fellow RAs in all matters pertaining to Summer Session Students and Summer Conferences
  • Assist in room assignments for incoming students for the fall semester
  • Perform clerical duties such as filing, copying, and assembly of mailings, etc.
  • Provide assistance with damage billing and appeals
  • Utilize excellent customer service in executing all responsibilities
  • Work shifts, during business hours, in the Office of Residential Life
  • Other duties as assigned

On-Call Responsibilities

  • Serve as rotating on-duty staff throughout the summer
  • Respond to emergency situations
  • Uphold and enforce University policies
  • Other duties as assigned

Community Development

  • Work to ensure the safety and comfort of Summer Session Students and Summer Conference guests
  • Coordinate with other Summer RAs to provide programs and activities for summer residents as deemed needed by the RHD
  • Mediate any roommate issues that may arise
  • Other duties as assigned

Important Dates
