Start Strong

Calling All Incoming Freshmen! Start Your College Career on the Right Track!

A one-week, skills-intensive program for freshmen who want to hit the ground running and stay focused!

The Jandrisevits Learning Center invites all first-year students to jump-start the fall semester with a one-week program in time management and study strategies, self-advocacy skills, test-taking anxiety-busters, critical reading approaches, and analytical writing techniques. This week-long intensive program helps incoming freshmen transition to the challenges of college-level thinking, reading, and writing, and shows students how to manage stress, stay organized, and use their time effectively—all before the fall semester begins. In addition, participants will learn about the academic support services available at the Jandrisevits Learning Center and other services that will help them navigate their way successfully through their first year at SHU.

While participating in the program, students have the option to live in a residence hall or to commute from home. Students will experience many aspects of college life during the program, including utilizing academic support services provided by the Jandrisevits Learning Center and attending campus programs and activities.

The Strong Start Pre-fall Program offers in-coming freshmen invaluable academic benefits:

  • Master new strategies and academic skills that you need for your college journey.
  • Explore different study strategies and find the one that works best for your learning style.
  • Prepare for your First Year Seminar course by refreshing and honing your reading and writing skills.
  • Learn about what SHU's faculty expect of you, and how to get the most out of your educational experience.
