Available Positions:

Youth Program Assistant

This position is perfect for students pursuing a career in education, or anyone interested in community service and working with children. Youth Program Assistants will work with children in grades K-8 within the Bridgeport Schools. afterschool programs, tutoring programs, or enrichment programs.

DEPARTMENT: Volunteer Programs

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to): 

  • Working one-on-one with a child who needs extra help
  • Assisting classroom teachers or program staff
  • Accomplishing administrative duties as needed (photocopying, filing, etc.)

EXPECTED HOURS: Various opportunities during school hours (M-F 8AM - 3:30PM) and afterschool hours (3PM - 7PM).
JOB REQUIREMENTS: Must enjoy working with children and be willing to work in an urban setting. Consistency is required.

Nonprofit Assistant

This position is perfect for any student with an interest in community service. Nonprofit Assistants will work within a nonprofit organization within the greater Bridgeport community to fulfill the needs of the organization.

DEPARTMENT: Volunteer Programs

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to): 

  • Perform administrative duties (newsletter publications, mailings, photocopying, filing)
  • Assisting customers and clients as needed
  • Locations can include schools, social service agencies, or other nonprofit organizations

EXPECTED HOURS: Monday through Friday 9AM - 5PM

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be willing to work in an urban setting
  • Candidates should be enthusiastic
  • Consistency is required

Van Driver

This position is ideal for students with clean driving records and an interest in community service. Students in this position will drive service-based work-study students and other volunteers to their sites using the Volunteer Programs' mini-vans and play a vital role in the operations of service learning programs. 

DEPARTMENT: Volunteer Programs and Service Learning

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):

  • Driving students safely to and from their work-study locations
  • Be able to follow office protocol on van expectations
  • Delivering donations to local nonprofits
  • Cleaning and maintaining vans on a regular basis

EXPECTED HOURS: Various shifts available, Monday through Friday 8AM - 7PM, Saturday 8AM - 1PM

Front Desk Assistant

  • Answer phones, take messages, and keep common area presentable
  • Be able to communicate effectively on the phone and in person with students, parents, office staff, and university staff/faculty
  • High level of confidentiality is expected
  • Assist with community based programming as needed
  • Never leave the desk unattended and stay at the desk until relieved of duties by a supervisor
  • Some driving duties to community based sites (upon passing university driving test)
  • Business casual attire is expected

International Student Buddy

Undergraduate students will meet with an English Language Learner (ELL) weekly for conversation (half hour sessions; 1 - 1 ratio).  The goal is to help ELL's adapt to their new community by promoting language and life skills.  The schedule is flexible.

  • Complete half hour training
  • Meet weekly with student for a half hour at a mutually agreed upon time and place for conversation (support provided by the English Language Institute).
  • Candidates should be enthusiastic
  • Consistency is required
