Application Process & Deadlines

Changes to FAFSA for 2017 - 2018

Starting with the 2017-18 financial aid application cycle, the following changes to the FAFSA application process will take effect:

  • Students (and Parents, as appropriate) will be able to submit a FAFSA earlier. Students will be able to file a 2017-18 FAFSA as early as October 1, 2016. The earlier submission date will be a permanent change.
  • Students (and Parents, as appropriate) will use earlier income information. Beginning with the 2017-18 FAFSA, students will be required to report income information from an earlier tax year. For example, on the 2017-18 FAFSA, students (and parents, as appropriate) will report their 2015 income information, rather than their 2016 income information.

The application deadline for returning undergraduate students will continue to be March 15, 2017 regardless of the early availability of the FAFSA (October 1st). However, we do encourage students and parents to complete the application process early if possible!

The Department of Education has made these changes in hopes of making it easier to import your 2015 information for which your taxes should already be complete.

It is important to remember that the 2016-17 and 2017-18 FAFSAs will use the same income and tax information. To avoid conflicting information, we strongly encourage families to use the Data Retrieval Tool on BOTH FAFSAs. Prior to completing the 2017-18 FAFSA, we strongly encourage you to access the 2016-17 FAFSA and confirm if you have successfully used the DRT.
