Verification Forms

NEW: Beginning with the 2017-18 FAFSA, families are required to report income information from the prior-prior tax year. For example, on the 2017-18 FAFSA, students (and parents, as appropriate) must report their 2015 income information, rather than that of 2016.

If your FAFSA is selected for federal verification you must submit additional documents (located under the My Documents tab on SHUAwards) to our office: a verification worksheet and 2015 IRS Income Verification (along with 2015 W2's for non-tax-filers only).

Tax Filer Income Verification Directions

***Please note that the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) is temporarily unavailable. Please refer to Option 2.***

Option 1 – IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT):

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) is the most efficient way to provide IRS Income Verification for the 2015 tax year:

  • log in to student's FAFSA record
  • select Make FAFSA Corrections
  • navigate to the Financial Information section
  • determine student/parent eligibility for use of the IRS DRT
  • once transfer is complete, electronically SIGN and SUBMIT the FAFSA

IRA/Pension Rollovers with IRS DRT: The IRS DRT includes IRA and Pension Rollovers in the untaxed income reported on the FAFSA. This may result in a higher Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and decrease in your financial need. Do not attempt to correct the information yourself. By changing any of the tax data, you compromise the data transferred from the IRS. If you do have an Untaxed IRA and/or Pension Rollover please provide the following to our office:

  • A written request for a correction to be made to the Untaxed IRA and/or Pension Rollover reported on your FAFSA;
  • A copy of Page 1 of your Federal 2015 IRS Federal Income Tax Return;
  • A copy of IRS Form 1099-R for all IRA and/or Pension distributions.

Please note that it takes up to two weeks for electronic tax return filers and up to eight weeks for paper tax return filers for IRS income information to become available for the IRS DRT. Also, recently widowed, separated, married - filed separately, or divorced parents that were required to file a joint return are ineligible to use the IRS DRT. In these cases you will need to request the tax return transcript(s) as noted in Option 2.

Option 2 - IRS Tax Return Transcripts:

If you cannot use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you must submit the 2015 IRS Tax Return Transcript(s) instead which can be obtained via one of the following:

  • Online Request: Follow this link and choose Get Transcript Online or Get Transcript by Mail
    • Be sure to request the Tax Return Transcript, NOT the Tax Account Transcript
  • IRS2Go App: You may download the app at either of the following to request a transcript:
  • Telephone Request: Call 1-800-908-9946 to request a 2015 IRS Tax Return Transcript.
  • Paper Request Form: IRS Form 4506T-EZ or IRS Form 4506-T

Due to the difference in processing time, we strongly recommend utilizing the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.
