Church as a Sacrament, The Second Vatican Council: Renewing Our Appreciation!
The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) was a watershed event in the history of the Church. The Council shook Catholic Identity in a profound way and was a significant transformation in the Church's sense of itself and its mission in the world. This course is an introduction to a more comprehensive understanding of Church as articulated in the Vatican II document, The Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium). The course explores the eight chapters of the document to unpack some of the themes, concerns, beauty, and challenges that the Fathers of Vatican II saw for the life and mission of the Church of the twentieth century and beyond. Consideration will be given to how this document can be and should be used to engage contemporary Catholic life and exercise an influence on the wider culture. Dr. Kelly will lead us on a six week exploration of how the effects of Vatican II continue to influence the contemporary church.
