Propel your Career with a DBA in Finance
The new Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in Finance is an applied research doctoral degree designed for finance executives and advanced business professionals to expand and deepen their knowledge and to acquire state-of-the-art qualifications for furthering their careers.
Unlike the traditional Ph.D. model that prepares candidates for academic careers, the DBA program focuses on developing knowledge with direct global business applications and prepares graduates for executive careers in business and financial institutions, consulting firms, government agencies or academic careers that require an equivalent of a Ph.D. degree from an accredited institution.
In keeping with the program’s mission and vision, five key program-level goals have been determined:
- You will be prepared for a highly specialized career in a business or financial institution, consulting firm, government agency or academic career.
- You will acquire advanced knowledge in finance and gain research skills for conducting independent, complex financial projects.
- You will demonstrate the creation of new knowledge through original research.
- You will gain global perspective on issues related to financial markets and institutions.
- You will comprehend and appreciate the importance of high ethical standards and values for finance professionals.
The program is devised as an extension of graduate study beyond a master’s degree in business and as a supplement to doctoral degrees in non-business fields.
The DBA uses a unique student cohort model, hands-on learning laboratories and blended “executive program” style meeting formats to encourage collaboration and networking among colleagues. During the first two years of the program, the weekend residency focuses on face-to-face classroom instruction, while independent research and dissertation preparation take center stage in the DBA’s final year. To fit the schedules of busy working professionals, most classes in the three-year, part-time program will meet at our Stamford Graduate Center at Landmark Square, five Fridays and Saturdays each trimester.
The weekend residency mode will enable you to:
- Engage directly in group research projects
- Gain direct access to instructional resources such as the library, the learning (Finance) laboratory, research materials, equipment and databases.
- Establish networking opportunities with faculty and your fellow students
You will find our DBA program to be highly focused and personalized, as it leads to specialized, original dissertation research projects matching the student's interests and career aspirations. Courses are taught by SHU’s Economics and Finance faculty — accomplished, recognized scholars with a record of professional engagement and experience. The program is offered through SHU’s John F. Welch College of Business, a member of fewer than five percent of elite business schools worldwide accredited by AACSB International.
The DBA includes in-depth study of extensive quantitative methods and mathematical modeling, global financial markets and institutions, and advanced risk management. Students create valuable new knowledge through original research, their choice of elective courses, and completion of a dissertation project that matches their interests and career objectives.

Why Pursue a DBA?
DBA students and graduates use theory and practice to actively influence the way business works. In this program, students will take current business research and apply it to real-life situations. Students will keep their fingers on the pulse of new and arising market trends, management techniques and financial theory. They will use this knowledge to enrich the business and financial world. The efficiency of the business industry relies on clever and innovative professionals, specifically those with a DBA.
One of the reasons DBA graduates find success is the flexibility and range of opportunities that this advanced program offers every student. DBA graduates can make a difference in all levels of business, from streamlining office practices and enhancing consulting opportunities to growing foreign business relations. Graduates with this degree can also influence academia in both teaching and leadership positions.
A DBA degree is becoming an attractive requirement for academic professionals since it focuses on research and application. In addition to academic interests, there are also numerous advanced job opportunities in finance, quantitative analysis, advertising, consulting, health management, government, management, sales and promotions looking for advanced professionals with doctoral-level skills. Graduates with a DBA in finance will be more employable and will stand out among those without an M.S., M.A. or MBA in a competitive job market.
