Armando F. Goncalves is Division President of People’s United Bank – South. He oversees the overall strategic direction for branches in both retail and business banking in Southern Connecticut and Westchester, New York.
Armando began his career at People’s United in 1975 as a branch teller at the Bridgeport North and Park Office while in college. After graduating, he was selected for the Retail Management Training Program. Armando received successive promotions including Vice President, Small Business and Commercial Checking Market Manager; Vice President and Branch Manager for the Bridgeport Main Office; Area Manager, Greater Bridgeport Region; and First Vice President and Senior Growth Manager in the People’s United Regional Banking Division.
Active in his community, Armando is a Board Member of Action for Bridgeport Community Development (ABCD), Member and Past President of the Bridgeport Rotary Club, Past President of the Portuguese-American Civic League, Board Member of the Fairfield Public Education Foundation, as well as a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for the Bridgeport Regional Business Council, Barnum Festival Board Member, and Board Member and Past Chair of the Greater Bridgeport Community Enterprises, Inc. He is also active with the Workplace of Fairfield County and Swim Across the Sound. His past affiliations include: former Alderman for the City of Bridgeport, former Board Member and Past President of the International Institute of Connecticut, Board Member of the Bridgeport YMCA, Past President of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Vasco da Gama Cultural & Civic Center, and former Board Member of the United Way.
In addition, Armando also served on Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch’s transition team and currently serves on the Mayor’s advisory cabinet.
He has been honored with numerous community service and volunteerism awards including the People’s United Bank Community Leadership Award, the State of Connecticut Governor’s Award for Community Service, the ABCD Community Service Award, the YMCA Award, and most recently, the Good Scout Award.
Armando was the 2011 Barnum Festival Ringmaster and lead a cadre of over 100 volunteers though eighteen events during the year. The Festival continues to be one of the longest running community events in Connecticut. Last year over 10,000 people attended or participated in festival events. The Great Street Parade ranks in the top ten parades to see in New England each year. The Festival also produced Bridgeport’s annual Fireworks extravaganza and brought entertainment and enjoyment to the residents in twenty-four area Nursing homes with the Road Show. The Festival was delighted to have had an individual with such strong ties to the community as its Ringmaster and it was a great year under Goncalves’ leadership.
Armando received his Bachelor’s Degree from Sacred Heart University and is a graduate of the National School of Banking. Armando lives in Fairfield with his wife, Nancy. They have two sons, Brian, an attorney in Manhattan, and Kevin, who is pursuing a Ph.D. at Tufts University in Boston.
