Computer Requirements

All EdTech program participants are required to have regular access to a computer with high-speed Internet access. In order to have the best possible online learning experience, it is recommended that you meet or exceed the following hardware, software, and Internet connection requirements. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, there might be the need to visit one of the SHU computer labs, a local library, or other location to view, download, or upload large course files or assignments.

Windows Computers (PC)

  • Internet Connection* – T1, Cable, or DSL (Broadband Connection)
  • Operating System – Vista, or higher
  • Computer Processor - 2-GHz (Vista) 32-bit (x86) or better
  • Computer Memory - 1 GB or more
  • Hardware – 30 GB of hard disk space
  • Screen Resolution - 1024x768 pixels or higher
  • Software** – Office 2007 or better and Anti-virus software
  • Internet Browsers – Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0, Firefox 3.6.22, or better

Acceptable Alternate - MAC OS X

  • Internet Connection* – T1, Cable, or DSL
  • Operating System - Mac OS X 10.5.4 or better
  • Computer Processor - 1.25 GHz G4 or better
  • Computer Memory - 1 GB or more
  • Hardware – 30 GB of hard disk space
  • Screen Resolution - 1024x768 pixels or higher
  • Software** – Office 2008 for MAC or better and Anti-virus software
  • Internet Browsers – Firefox 3.6.22, Safari 3.1.2 or better

Note: Participants who use MACs are responsible for ensuring that they are using a newer operating system and that the course instructor can view all submitted assignment files on a PC computer. Most of the instructional videos created for this program were created on a PC computer and demonstrate how to use PC compatible software. Whenever possible, software will be selected by course instructors that can be installed on both PCs and MAC computers. However, cross-platform software is not always available. As a MAC user, you may be required to install software on your computer that allows you to run Windows and Windows applications. 

*A broadband connection with a minimum speed of 256kbps upload and 512kbps download is required for courses requiring the use of a webcam or headset.

**Specific courses may have additional software, plug-in, or equipment requirements.
