Mother Dolores Hart
Centismus Annus Pro Pontifice (CAPP) and the Farrington College of Education co-sponsored a Communion Breakfast for educators in March. His Excellency, Frank J. Caggiano concelebrated Mass with CAPP honoree, Father William Sangiovanni and SHU’s own Father David Buckles. Mother Dolores Hart, O.S.B. was the speaker for the event, addressing a standing room only crowd in University Commons. Before she joined the Benedictines, Mother Dolores had a seven year acting career (ten films and on Broadway) famously starring with Elvis in Loving You and King Creole. In a shocking shift in 1963, Mother Dolores joined the cloistered Regina Laudis community. An eminent storyteller, speaking from the heart, Mother Dolores kept a spellbound audience enchanted—you could ‘hear a pin drop’. Mother Dolores is still a voting member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and serves as dean of Education at Regina Laudis. For more information: an HBO documentary of her life, God is the Bigger Elvis and her autobiography, The Ear of the Heart: An Actress’ Journey from Hollywood to Holy Vows detail her life’s story.
Also honored at the event: Father William Sangiovanni, former director of SHU Campus Ministry (1968-91) and current president of Notre Dame Catholic High School in Fairfield.
