Timothy Patterson, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor

Through my teaching at Sacred Heart University, I hope to impart on my students a framework for developing methods and curricula that will be responsive to the dynamic classrooms in which they will work. Such a framework, built upon the principles of reflection, curiosity, empathy, and current best practices, will allow my students to connect with classrooms of diverse students, deliver meaningful and relevant content, and become and remain passionate educators.

In addition to my work at Sacred Heart University, I have taught courses on social studies education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Prior to pursuing my doctorate, I was a middle and high school social studies teacher for six years in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

Most recently Dr. Patterson conducted research in China, observing a cohort of social studies and humanities teachers who engaged in professional development at historical and cultural sites across the country.

Dr. Patterson has contributed to the Understanding Fiscal Responsibility project at Teachers College, Columbia University, several Teaching American History grant projects, and a Teaching with Primary Sources grant through the Library of Congress.
