Edward Joyner, Ed.D.

Associate Professor & Director of Five Year Program

Dr. Joyner began his education career at Hillhouse High School in New Haven, Connecticut in 1970 and spent the next thirty-five years of his career as a high school social studies teacher, assistant principal, principal, and college administrator. For twenty years, he led the most comprehensive school reform model in American education. He has worked throughout the United States and the world training educators, parents, and policy makers to improve their collective capacity to educate and develop children. His research interests include leadership, community building, effective teaching, and enhancing student holistic development. He has authored articles dealing with systemic reform and co-authored six books addressing child development and large-scale school reform issues. He has also lectured widely throughout the United States, Canada, England, France, and Puerto Rico.

Dr. Joyner retired in 2005 as the Executive Director of the School Development Program at Yale University where he was also an Assistant Professor of Child and Adolescent Development. He is currently an Associate Professor of Education at Sacred Heart University doing what he loves most—teaching in a spiritual environment in an institution whose mission is to prepare students to teach with artistry informed by science, and to do so with a passionate commitment to the betterment of humanity. He has been married for 39 years to Shirley Love Joyner who is an assistant principal at Hillhouse High School in New Haven. His children Monica and Edward II are also educators in the New Haven schools. His favorite quote is “to whom much is given, much is required.”
