Mike Abate is a very successful artist who enjoys wakeboarding and motorcross. He is from Derby, CT and has received many honors such as 2013 2nd place for “Leap of Faith” watercolor painting in the Sacred Heart Juried Student Art Exhibition, Honorable mention for two of two illustration pieces accepted into the Sacred Heart Juried Student Art Exhibition and was accepted into Student Art Exhibition 2012 at the John Slade Ely House Center for Contemporary Art Exhibition of Undergraduate of College Art Work in Connecticut at Yale University in New Haven, CT. He is an Art & Design major and plans to find a graphic design job within the wakeboarding industry.  Mike has been published in Transworld Wakeboarding Magazine for his piece “Danny Harf.” He is expected to graduate in May 2014.

Elizabeth Acuna graduates in May 2013 with a BS in Nursing.  She is from Watertown, CT and works as an oncology and hospice nurse.  In the future, Elizabeth wants to pursue graduate studies in a Family Practitioner program.

Leah Arsenault is a Marketing major, with a concentration in Fashion Marketing, is from Attleboro, MA. She plans on graduating in 2016. Leah has been the recipient of the Sacred Heart Trustee Scholarship as well as the Sacred Heart Dean’s Scholarship. After college, Leah plans to obtain an internship that will utilize her creative skills in the field of Fashion Marketing. Leah’s work has also been published in the Her Campus Magazine at Sacred Heart and oBaz.com.

Mary Awad is the Art and Photography Editor of Horizons and plans to graduate in May 2016. She is currently undecided but is thinking about pursuing a major in Digital Communication and a minor in English. She is from East Norwich, NY and is a part of the marching band. She has received the Thomas More Scholarship and the Rycenga Freshman Writing award. She does not have too bright an idea of what she wishes to do in the future but hopes to live in Boston while working a job she genuinely enjoys. 

Chris Balzano is from Northford, CT. He is graduating in May 2013 with a major in Graphic Design. He has been awarded the Charles A. Plohn Art Scholarship and received first placed in Advanced Graphic Design (Sacred Heart Student Show 2013) and RYASAP Anti-Smoking Competition 2012. After graduation, he plans to head to the west coast to look for a job in his area of study.

Justine Quammie Bassomb is a graduating English Major accepted into the Five Year Education Program. She is originally from Brooklyn, NY and resides in Long Island. Her writing career began in 11th Grade and she continues to hone her craft and reap the pleasurable benefits of the written word. She hopes to participate in a Creative Writing MFA Program …after she makes and keeps some money.

Caroline Bertram is an Exercise Science major from North Scituate, RI.  She is in the Thomas More Honors Program, was nominated for the Sacred Heart Leadership Award, appointed Ambassador for Sacred Heart’s Annual Discovery Alumni Gala and is the President of S.W.E.E.T. Peer Educators. After college, Caroline plans to go to graduate school and then earn her doctorate in Physical Therapy.

Lauren Bierman originally from South Windsor, CT, now lives in Vermont.  She graduates from the RN to BSN program in May, 2013.  Her plans are to pursue graduate work.  Lauren is the mother of two young boys and has a supportive husband and family.

Brittany Burger is an English major from Brick, NJ. She has been on the Dean’s List and is a recipient of the AEA Scholarship as well as a member of the Sacred Heart marching band and winter guard. Brittany is graduating in May 2013 and plans on later attending graduate school for a Masters in teaching.

Thomas Burke is a double major undergraduate student in Religious Studies and English with a minor in Middle Eastern Studies and hails from Bethel, CT. Burke will be graduating with the class of 2015. Burke is a member of the Sacred Heart Wrestling Team. Aside from being an active part of the Sacred Heart community, Burke has also served on the USMC with two combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. After graduating from Sacred Heart, Burke plans on attending Yale Divinity School for seminary.

Jennifer Clinton is a member of the Class of 2014 and resides in Sayville, NY. She is pursuing a major in Graphic Design and an Honors Minor and is part of the Sacred Heart Women’s Golf team. She plans on getting a job in the graphic design field and has received the Thomas More Scholarship and a Division 1 Golf Scholarship.

Maria Damianou is majoring in Visual Arts and Design with a minor in Chemistry. She graduated in May 2012 and is in SFMA Post-Bac Program. She has received many honors, one of them being her acceptance into the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles WEST 49 and 50 Annual Competition. She will be doing summer research internship along with pursuing animation and painting for different events. She is also applying for graduate school.

Giani DePalma is a Business Economics major from Feeding Hills, MA. He plans to graduate in May of 2015.

Judith Downs is a Marketing and Graphic Design major from Sheldon, CT. She is a part of the Class of 2015 and won 1st Place, Intermediate Illustration Category for her piece “Natalie” and 1st Place, Foundations Category for her piece “The Bottles.” She is a member of the Club Tennis team and hopes to get a job in the fashion industry or her Masters in Business.

Alexa Duffy is a Graphic Design major and a member of the Class of 2016. She is on the women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track team and has received the North Andover Soccer Association Scholarship. After graduating, she hopes to work for a well-known magazine. She resides in Andover, MA.

Sean Elliott is an undergraduate student with a major in Finance from New Haven, CT. Elliott will be graduating in 2014. Along with his publication in Horizons, Elliott has also been published in The Spectrum, Pioneer Magazine, Prologue Yearbook, Norwalk’s The Hour, HamletHub, and local sports blogs. After graduating, Elliott hopes to become a photojournalist or, possibly, a financial analyst.

Rachel Fogarty is a Graphic Design and Illustration major from Stratford, CT and is expected to graduate in 2015. She has received awards in Sacred Heart’s annual student art exhibits and has had artwork accepted into Society of Illustrators of LA student exhibition in 2012. She hopes to enter the graphic design field and to be a freelance illustrator after graduation. 

Gina Gallo is an undeclared major from Elizabeth, NJ who has made Dean’s List. She plans on graduating in 2016. After college, Gina hopes to get her masters in Speech Language Pathology and later work in a school system or hospital.

Edward Garrity is a Graphic Design major from Middlebury, CT who has a minor in Studio Arts. He has received honors from the Sacred Heart Student Exhibition such as 1st Place Intermediate Graphic Design and an Honorable Mention in Painting. He plans on graduating in May 2014 and wants to have a job where he can make art for a living.

Keisan Gittens is a Media Studies major from Bridgeport, CT. He is graduating in May 2013.  After college, Keisan plans on attending graduate school and finding a position with a company that will allow him to write.  Keisan’s writing has also been published in the Spectrum Newspaper and prior Horizons publications. He is also in the process of publishing his novel, “A Life Without Solace”.

Sujatha Herne is graduating in May 2013 with a major in English. Herne has previously been published in Horizons.

Iyesha Jalloh is from Bridgeport, CT.  A History major, she plans to graduate in 2016.

Holly Johnson is from Orange, CT is an Art major who will graduate in May 2015.

Tess Kallmeyer is a Social Work major from Pacific Palisades, CA.  She is an honors student and plans on graduating in 2015. After college, Tess wants a job doing social work in a school setting.

Andrew Lawlor is an Art major from Freehold, NJ.  He plans to graduate in May, 2016.

Liz Lezama is an English major, Writing Concentration, from Norwalk, CT. She is graduating in May 2013. After college, Liz plans on working at a publishing company, editing children’s books and young adult novels. Liz hopes to one day go back and get her Masters in Editing or obtain a certificate in the field. In addition to being the essay and creative non-fiction editor for Horizons, Liz was also the Managing Editor of the Spectrum Newspaper. Liz’s writing has been published in Horizons Literary Journal, the Spectrum Newspaper, 4 Sunflowers Media, and Previewstay.com.

Elise Lorenz is from Rancho Santa Maragrita, CA. She plans on graduating in May 2014 with a major in Graphic Design and a minor in Computer science. She plays for the Sacred Heart Women’s Basketball team and plans to get a job after college. 

Samantha Malachowski serves as the Fiction Editor for Horizons this year after previously being published. Malachowski will be graduating in August 2013 with a major in English and a concentration in Writing. Along with Horizons, Malachowski has also worked as the Chief Copy Editor for The Spectrum and as a Classroom Learning Assistant for ENCC102. Her hobbies include reading, writing, video games, and cats. After graduating, Malachowski plans on obtaining her MFA and, eventually, a Ph.D in Rhetoric and Writing.

Michael Manning is pursuing a major in English with a minor in Italian and is from Trumbull, CT. Manning plans on graduating in August 2013. After graduating from Sacred Heart, Manning plans on attending graduate school.

Colleen Mason is majoring in English with a minor in Philosophy and is a May 2013 graduate. Mason is an active member of the Sacred Heart community, holding a membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and a position as Captain of the Sacred Heart Fencing team, while also earning a spot on the Dean’s List consecutively in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. Her work has been featured in previous publications of Horizons and has also been featured in The Spectrum. Along with being an active part of the Sacred Heart community, Mason is also the recipient of the Trustee Scholarship and Athletics Grant. Outside of her busy academic life, Mason enjoys “bumming around the beach” and aspires to write an award winning novel, possibly become an astronaut, and find a way to “become ridiculously famous.”

Brent A. Middleton is a sophomore and will be graduating in 2015 with a B.A in English and Philosophy. His hometown is Greenwich, CT. Although Brent is just finishing his second year at Sacred Heart University, he's accomplished an enormous amount already. In addition to being part of the SHU Rotaract Club, Peace By Justice, PhRST (Philosophy, Religious Studies and Theology club) and more, he also traveled to Beijing, China for the duration of Summer 2012 to teach English. This spring he is studying abroad at SHU's own campus in Dingle, Ireland.

Noelle Monk is an English major from Milford, CT who has had additional works published in Pioneer Magazine. She is graduating in the spring of 2013. After college, Noelle hopes to find a job and continue to write.

Evan Morse is from Norwich, CT.  While still undecided about a major, he plans to graduate in 2016.

Michelle Navarro is a Graphic Design major from Piscataway, NJ. She will graduate in 2013 and would like to find a job in her field of study after college. She has received the Charles A. Plohn Scholarship 2012 and got 1st place in Advanced Illustration in the Sacred Heart Art Show in 2012 and 2013. She also runs Cross Country and Indoor Track.

Caitlin Neary is a Biology major from Greenwich, CT, graduates in May, 2013.  After a short break, she plans to go to graduate school and study Environmental Science.

Victor Nieto is an English major from Spring, TX. He graduates in May, 2013.

Marisa Papa is a Psychology major, with a minor in Theatre, from Orange, CT. She plans on graduating in 2015 and has made Dean’s List. Marisa plans to attend graduate school after college. Marisa’s work has also been published in the Spectrum Newspaper.

Alyssa Papachristos is a Graphic Design major who will graduate in May 2013. She is from Milford, CT and has been awarded many honors, such as SILA 51(Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles), Charles A. Plohn Scholarship 2012, Honorable Mention in RYASAP Anti-Smoking Campaign 2012, Honorable Mention in Annual Student Art Exhibit2012 and First Place in Advanced Graphic Design 2013. She has been published in The Spectrum and Reader’s Digest. She is intending to get a job after graduation. 

Mark Podesta is an undergraduate student pursuing a major in English with an Honors Studies minor. Originally from Brick, NJ, Podesta plans on graduating in May 2015. Podesta is the recipient of an Honors Scholarship and has worked as Assistant News Editor for The Spectrum. After graduating, Podesta would like to attend graduate school in New York, publish his first book, and possibly record a CD.

Alicia Provenzano is from Stratford, CT and is a Art major.

Sara Race is from Briarcliff Manor, NY.  She is an Art and Graphic Design Major who plans to graduate in 2014. She hopes to travel after graduation and to get a job that allows her to travel to many places that she has always been interested in.

Vincent Ramaglia is a Graphic Design major who plans on graduating in 2014. He was the Drum Major for this year’s marching band and has been accepted to SINY National Juried Competition, featured in the student art show for the last 3 years, and won the Outstanding Sophomore award last year in the band. Vincent wants to get a job that lets him create what he loves that will make other people happy.

Amie Reilly graduates in May 2013.  She is an English major from Milford, CT.

Julia Romano is expected to graduate in May 2015. She is a Media Studies major and plans to get a job in advertizing or public relations after graduation. Her hometown is Wallington, CT.

Giorgio Scalone is a Media Studies major from Woodridge, NJ.  He plans to graduate in May 2014.

Amanda Sialano is a Communication and Media Studies major intending to graduate in May 2015. She is a member of the women’s club volleyball team and resides in Hawthorne, NY. She is an Assistant Sports Editor for The Spectrum and a Style Editor for Pioneer Magazine. After graduation, she plans on attending graduate school.

Meahgan Souza is an Exercise Science/Physical Therapy Major from Wilmington, MA. She is on the Women’s Hockey Team and plans on graduation in 2015.  She has been given in the 2011 Dr. Ruth M. Grant Academic Achievement Award and is expected to continue on the PT school after graduation. 

Stephanie Taglianetti is an English major from East Rockaway, NY. She is graduating in May 2013. After college, Stephanie plans to attend graduate school at the California Institute of the Arts to obtain an MFA in Creative Writing. Aside from Horizons, Stephanie has also been published in the Spectrum Newspaper as the She Said columnist.

Joy Vandermark is a student from Stamford, CT who is majoring in Graphic Design with a minor in Marketing.  She plans to graduate in the spring of 2014 and has received an honorable mention in the Sacred Heart Art Show for her piece, “Mermaid.”  After graduation, she would like to travel and achieve her dream of becoming part of the magazine industry.

Matthew L. Wagner is an English Major and will be graduating in May 2013. His hometown is Brookhaven, NY.  He says, “My adventures into creative writing began when I was perhaps 14, but it wasn’t until enrolling at Sacred Heart that the adventure blossomed into a passion. I’ve been writing creatively for the past several years, and exploring the power of words with rigor, joy, heartache, and love. Every passion, discipline, and craft begins with some form of communication. Beginnings themselves are rooted in words, and I believe there is no purer way to express them, along with everything else the universe holds, than to use the very words from which they rise. Poetry offers a glimpse into the miracle that is creation, and gives both reader and writer a taste of immortality.”

Kimberly Woodruff is an English Major from Randolph, NJ. She plans to graduate in May, 2014.

Linda A. Vichiola-Coppola is an English major, focusing on writing, from Bridgeport, CT. She is planning on graduating in December 2015. Linda is an Honors student and a part of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society. Linda also had work published in last year’s edition of Horizons.

Rebecca Zebedeo is from East Hartford, CT and is studying to achieve a major in Graphic Design and a minor in Psychology. She plans to graduate in May 2014 and hopes to travel to New York or Los Angeles in order to pursue a career in Graphic Design.
