Careers in Sports Communication and Media

The sports industry has seen incredible growth over the past several decades: from $90 billion annually in 1989 to close to $250 billion annually in 2010, and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 23% rise in sports-related jobs for the decade ending 2018. These national trends are encouraging, and they are further enhanced by the local sports media landscape. ESPN (Bristol), NBC Sports (Stamford), CBS Sports (NYC), WWE (Stamford), YES Network (Stamford), and many other sports media companies are all headquartered within an easy train ride or manageable automobile commute from Sacred Heart University’s Fairfield campus. Additionally, ESPN and NBC Sports, through the state of Connecticut’s “First Five” program, are committed to substantial hiring over the next several years.

Taking advantage of its ideal location within a growing sports media industry the SCM graduate program arranges for high-quality internships, provides valuable networking opportunities through well-placed alumni and advisory board members, and incorporates working professionals into its curriculum. As a complement to this professional experience, on-campus practicums are also essential and compulsory elements of the SCM program. SCM students will produce publishable material for Division 1 sports teams as part of their required academic work, and they will create broadcast multimedia for the program’s flagship Connecticut Sports Show, a sports magazine web/television program focusing on Connecticut high school and college sports.

The graduates of SCM will be prepared to find employment as content creators/professional communicators in the sports media industry. The SCM curriculum teaches students the advanced professional skills necessary to communicate effectively across a variety of media platforms in the specific area of sports media. Students will learn how to plan, create, and distribute multimedia productions within organizations and to the public or consumers. By the completion of the SCM degree, students will have compiled a robust portfolio of professional materials that demonstrates the advanced skill sets necessary to excel in their respective job sectors. Along the way, students’ work will also be distributed, broadcast, and/or published through various media outlets while they are completing their graduate program.
