Percussion

Percussion at Sacred Heart University is part of a large performing arts family. The percussion studio aims to seek the potential in every student and unlock the artistry that every student possesses. The performing arts department provides opportunities for percussionists to express themselves with high quality literature within the context of a non-music major program.

There are many different ensembles for students to perform solo, chamber, and large ensemble repertoire. In addition, private lesson instruction is tailored to the needs of each individual student to allow them to be wellrounded and able to perform any style of music.

The percussion curriculum is designed with a comprehensive approach that includes studying snare drum, timpani, mallet percussion, marching percussion, drumset, accessory percussion and world percussion. The studio regularly brings in guest clinicians and has masterclasses throughout each school year. SHU does not have a music major degree.

While members of the program don’t want to make a career out of music, they still want to perform music at a high level of excellence in college. Members have the opportunity to perform in Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Pep Band, Jazz Ensemble, Heartbeat Percussion, and Percussion Ensemble.

The Percussion Ensemble performs around the region at conventions, high schools, colleges, and is a regular performer at the Percussive Arts Society CT Day of Percussion. Members also attend The Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) – the annual fourday international convention full of clinics & performances.

Percussionists at Sacred Heart are encouraged to take percussion ensemble and private lessons throughout their entire undergraduate and graduate degree programs. These ensembles are the laboratory where percussionists apply their skills and put them into practice. Members of the Percussion Ensemble are also required to be active members of The Percussive Arts Society, which is the preeminent percussion organization in the world.
