String Ensemble

The orchestral strings program at Sacred Heart University is part of a thriving performing arts department. Through the strings program, students learn the art of listening and empathy and work together to produce something that can be shared with others.

Both the large ensemble and a smaller more advanced ensemble rehearse once a week. The orchestral strings program also combines with the other instrumental areas to form a symphony orchestra every so often. Being involved with the string program allows members to meet other enthusiastic musicians who are studying a wide range of subjects at SHU. It is very important to have a group to belong to and the music department is the perfect way to find a musical home in college.

SHU does not have a music major but that does not mean that the quality is any lower. Quality music is the goal of any musical ensemble, regardless of the degree of study of the members. While the repertoire certainly covers Vivaldi and Mozart, the curriculum also includes pop music like Coldplay or Led Zeppelin. The program is designed to allow members to use music as a vehicle to improve themselves as people, not only as musicians.

In addition to one or two concerts per semester, the ensemble is often invited to play for special events at the University and occasionally in the community at weddings or ceremonies. The ensemble is available for hire for these special events.

All orchestral strings students are encouraged to take private lessons to hone their skills and realize their full potential. Private teachers are available for violin, viola, cello, bass, and harp.  Teachers are on hand and lessons are available for 1 or 2 credits per semester.

The strings program is full of members that love music and want to keep it part of their lives. The program has a warm and friendly environment and is proudly non-competitive. The strings program is always looking for dedicated students to join and have fun playing quality music!
