Financial Aid for Performing Arts

Members of Performing Arts Programs (Choir, Band, Theatre and Dance) may be eligible to receive a Performing Arts Grant. Students are welcome to join as many programs as they wish, however they will only receive a grant for one of these four programs.
 
Performing Arts Grant for Vocal Ensembles
Incoming first year students are eligible to receive a Performing Arts Grant for participating with the Sacred Heart University Choral program. Students selected by audition to participate in the Choirs and Choral Program on campus are eligible to receive an annual, renewable grant. These members should show high potential and musical promise. Preference will be given to students with strong musical and choral ensemble experience, and to those who are willing to make a firm commitment to the program for a complete academic year.  To be eligible, students commit to participate in two choral e ensembles, which entails an average commitment of about 4-5 hours per week. The ensembles include Concert Choir, Pioneer Choir, Ladies Only Vocal Ensemble, Women’s Quartet and the Liturgical Choir.  It is definitely possible to participate in more than two ensembles per semester if desired, however the maximum award amount still applies.

All students who have been awarded a grant are required to fulfill the programs requirements detailed in the choir handbook in order for yearly renewal. Undergraduate full time students who would like to join the choral program during their sophomore, junior, or senior year may do so, however there is no guarantee that Performing Arts Grants will be available.

Auditions take place on an ongoing basis.  Students selected will serve the community by singing in the choir.  There will be opportunities to serve as cantors, soloists and section leaders.  The audition is very informal and low-key and will consist of singing vocal warm-ups, a prepared song, and reading through a choral excerpt.

Performing Arts Grant for Instrumental Ensembles
Incoming first year students are eligible to receive a Performing Arts Grant for participating with the Sacred Heart Band program. Early Decision applicants to the University must meet the admissions department deadline to have submitted all materials and have performed or scheduled an audition with the Band Staff. 
 
Auditions are for placement purposes and Performing Arts Grant consideration only.

Incoming first year students who have been awarded a band grant are required to fulfill the programs requirements detailed in the band handbook in order for yearly renewal. Undergraduate full time students who would like to join the band during their sophomore, junior, or senior year may do so, however there is no guarantee that Performing Arts Grants will be available. Graduate and part time undergraduate students are not eligible for grant consideration. Speak with the band staff for more information.

Students selected by audition to participate in the Band Program can receive an annual, renewable grant. These members should show high potential and musical promise. Preference will be given to students with strong musical and instrumental ensemble experience, and to those who are willing to make a firm commitment to the program throughout the academic year.  

All wind and percussion instrumentalists must sign up for MU-136 (University Concert Band).  This ensemble offers a grant, and participation in this ensemble enables students to be eligible for grants for participation in Marching Band and Pep Band. Guard Members are also eligible for this grant. Orchestral string players are ligible to receive a participation grant. All members must sign up for String Ensemble to get this grant. (MU-134-A)

Performing Arts Grant for Theatre Arts Program (TAP)

Incoming first year students are eligible to receive a Performing Arts Grant for participating with the Sacred Heart Theatre Arts Program (TAP). Early Decision applicants to the University must meet the December 1st deadline to have submitted all materials and have performed or scheduled an audition with the Theatre Staff.
 
Auditions are for placement purposes and Performing Arts Grant consideration only.

Incoming first year students who have been awarded a TAP grant are required to fulfill the programs requirements detailed in the TAP handbook in order for yearly renewal. Undergraduate full time students who would like to join TAP during their sophomore, junior, or senior year may do so, however there is no guarantee that Performing Arts Grants will be available. Graduate and part time undergraduate students are not eligible for grant consideration.

All enrolled students at Sacred Heart University, regardless of major or prior experience, are eligible to receive a grant applicable toward their tuition. Areas of concentration:

  • Performanceacting, movement, voice.
  • Technicalsound, lights, deck, rigging.
  • Administrationmarketing, front of house, production.
  • Designcostumes, props, set, lights, sound.
  • Creativedirecting, writing, composing.

Performing Arts Grants for SHU Dance Programs

Incoming freshmen that are interested in dancing in one or more of our dance programs are eligible to receive a dance grant and/or dance scholarship. In order to qualify to receive a grant, you must first attend the dance grant audition. Attending a dance grant audition class at SHU will allow us to determine the best and most appropriate dance programs for you. Every attempt should be made to participate in the dance grant audition. Students who are not able to audition in person may audition for admission to the dance program by submitting a non-returnable audition DVD or emailing a video link via YouTube or Vimeo to the Director of Dance at williamk3@sacredheart.edu Grants are offered in various amounts depending on the dance program you are invited to participate in as well as pending compliance with the expectations of that program. Scholarships are awarded for technical and artistic excellence in ballet, modern or Jazz dance.
