Anthony J. Papa
Anthony Papa has been at SHU since 2010 and teaches law and policing courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs. Prior to joining the faculty at SHU he spent twenty years with the NYPD and retired at the rank of Lieutenant. His last assignment with the NYPD was in the Detective Bureau in the Bronx. Some of his other duties over his 20-year career included assignments on patrol in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx, teaching physical education and tactics at the Police Academy and commanding the Subpoena Litigation Unit of the NYPD Legal Bureau. Anthony earned his law degree in 1998 and immediately began practicing law for the NYPD, and at a private law firm in Garden City, NY, where he became a managing attorney. He is licensed to practice law in New York State and the Eastern and Southern District of the United States District Court of New York. His area of private practice concentrated in insurance defense, but he also practiced criminal law representing the NYPD while assigned to the Legal Bureau.
Anthony holds a NYS certification as a police instructor and is also NYS certified as a “train the trainor.” These licenses permit him to teach NYS certified security guards and peace officers, which he has been doing since 1998.
Immediately prior to arriving at SHU, Anthony was the Chair of the CJ Department at a small private college in Westchester County, NY.
