Jo-Marie Kasinak, M.S.
Area of Specialization: Ecology
Jo-Marie previously worked at the Auburn University Fisheries Station as a technician. She gained experience in aquaculture, maintaining indoor and outdoor fish systems. She also helped run the Auburn University Fish Market, and lead tours of the station to school groups, and other visitors. At the same time she was working in the Outreach Department of the College of Arts and Sciences at Auburn University. In this position she helped coordinate Science Olympiads for elementary and middle school students. She also helped organize a luncheon and symposium for the Society of Women in Sciences and Mathematics. The purpose of this event was to encourage high school girls from Alabama to pursue careers in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology.
Jo-Marie is thrilled to be back home at Sacred Heart. She was hired to teach concepts in biology courses as well as to help coordinate the concepts in biology labs. She looks forward to learning how to be a better teacher, and to once again being an active member of the biology department.
Degrees and Certifications
Jo-Marie Kasinak received her B.S. in biology in 2011 from Sacred Heart University, and a M.S. In biological sciences from Auburn University in 2013. Her undergraduate researched focused on the population genetics of horseshoe crabs within Long Island Sound. Her graduate researched focused on aquatic ecology, specifically on monitoring and managing harmful algal blooms in freshwater systems. As part of her thesis she helped develop and refine a method for using bench-top fluoremetry to quantify cyanobacterial abundance in water samples. Also she investigated the use of grass carp (an herbivorous fish) for controlling Lyngbya wollei (an invasive filamentous cyanobacterium) blooms in Alabama ponds. While at Auburn she was awarded research grants from the Auburn University Graduate School, as well as The Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, and a scholarship from the Mid-South Aquatic Plant Management Society.
