The facilities of the Department of Art & Design are state of the art and completely up-to-date. Classrooms, labs, and studios are located in the Oakview building and all spaces are dedicated exclusively to Art & Design use.
The Art & Design Deaprtment’s Macintosh Lab contains the very latest models of Apple iMacs. The lab consists of twenty newly installed workstations, each a large screen Intel iMac. All units are fully integrated into a single network and completely accessible to all students. All stations are loaded with the latest versions of the Adobe Creative Cloud 2014, the industry standard in Digital Design. In addition, there are workstations with specialized software for individualized tasks, plus standard and large format scanners, two professional quality large format Epson printers, wireless Wacom drawing tablets, and a dedicated wireless network. The department has also added a complement of iPads that are available for use by students.
The lab is also the smartest of our “smart classrooms.” Through the use of an 80-inch Sharp HD flatscreen monitor, Apple Desktop Remote, high-end projectors, wireless Airport technology, Turnaround Software, and the ability to target your laptop into the existing network, we are able to accomplish amazing integration of technology with learning. The department also has all the necessary hardware and software to support projects in the new Adobe Digital Publishing System for iPad magazine development.
Mobile Computing Program
Through a professionally conceived and highly developed mobile computing program, students are able to purchase a professional designer’s laptop and have wireless access anywhere on campus as well as 24/7 access to all of the required design software through the purchase of a subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud. With the continued enthusiastic support of the College and the University, the Department of Art & Design is able to fully support studies in aesthetics and professional practices with a complete set of the identical professional digital design tools. All Graphic Design courses are supported by a state-of-the-art Macintosh lab facility with the latest hardware and software, along with a dedicated full time Apple Certified Technology Manager providing personalized support exclusively to Art & Design students. Currently every computer in the Mac
Lab is outfitted with the entire Adobe Creative Cloud which includes all of Adobe’s software, most notably Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Flash, AfterEffects, Dreamweaver, Acrobat Pro, and Bridge. The Department of Art & Design provides students with access to the most popular design software and the standards in our industry.
The new Adobe Digital Publishing Suite and mobile iOS devices have become an integral part of Digital Design at Sacred Heart University. While we encourage students to own their own mobile iOS devices, the department has a stock of iPads that are available to any student for their use in working in areas like iPad development.
There are five separate studios in the art building, each dedicated to a single purpose.
The graphic design studios are dedicated to graphic design classes outside of the Mac Lab. The Department of Art & Design emphasizes learning the art of design beginning with fundamentals courses. The graphic design studios are used for discussions, lectures, critiques, and with the entire campus being wireless, it is a very popular spot to work while using your MacBook Pro (our current model), or any laptop computer in conjunction with the requisite hand skills required in graphic design.
The illustration studio is the dedicated studio for illustration and color theory. There are twenty work stations, a wall of flat files for storing your work, matting facilities, and, of course, music. For more than a decade students in illustration classes have produced work from this studio that has been accepted by the nation’s premier student illustration showcases: The Society of Illustrator's Shows in both New York and Los Angeles.
The painting and figure drawing studio is dedicated for use by our painting and figure drawing classes. There are three different types of lighting systems available plus a fantastic exposure of natural light through one entire wall of windows. The courses concentrate on oil painting and drawing of live models and still life work, and they are a part of every art major's experience at Sacred Heart University.
The foundations studio is used by all of the foundation level courses: Drawing I, Visual Organization, 3D Drawing, and 3D Design. It is ideal for foundation courses with drawing and work stations surrounding a central area for a still life. The room has extraordinary natural light plus a dual lighting system and portable spot lights. It also provides inspiring views through two window walls out onto the forested area that surrounds the Oakview facility.
The Art Building
The Department of Art & Design is situated in an ideal location just off the main campus. This area is a small education and high tech location containing Oakview with the Art & Design Department and the School of Education and a regional high school for the Arts and the area headquarters for Canon Corporation. The Oakview building is a modern facility ideal for both our digital and traditional classes. Situated at the end of a wooded cul-de-sac, students have ample opportunity to draw, paint, or photograph from nature, plus they are steps away from being inside of our state-of-the-art computer facility. The building contains another gallery for the exclusive use of the Art & Design Department. The Oakview facility is serviced at all times by a shuttle service (a five minute trip from campus) as well as food services and security. It is an exciting place to study Art & design.
As part of the department’s efforts to provide the very best resources available for learning software, multiple licenses are available for using the leading online training lessons of lynda.com; essential online training for student use. Software training and answers to any questions are at your disposal 24/7 and from anywhere in the world.
