Statement on DACA by John J. Petillo, President of Sacred Heart University

News Story: September 6, 2017

Yesterday, the U.S. Attorney General announced the government’s intention to dissolve the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Effective in in six months, the government will begin phasing out safeguards for undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children.

Sacred Heart University stands firm in its belief that these so-called “dreamers” are innocent of any immigration crimes or maleficence, and should be treated with dignity, respect, and afforded every opportunity to become full, naturalized U.S. citizens.  It is our hope that now, faced with this imposing deadline, the U.S. Congress and Senate will act morally, courageously and with the spirit of independence, freedom and hope upon which this great country was founded and has flourished. Anything less than a clear, reasonable and expeditious path to full naturalization for these immigrants will be shameful and beneath the dignity of all Americans.
