Executive Director of University Construction & Facilities Wins Award from Contractors’ Organization

Marc Izzo, Sacred Heart University’s executive director of University Construction & Facilities, recently received the Private Owner of the Year Award from the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Connecticut.

The organization represents 150 commercial, industrial and institutional construction contractors, subcontractors, material suppliers and professionals in the state’s construction industry.

“I was nominated by my peers and recognized by them,” said Izzo, who acknowledged being surprised by the nomination and shocked by the award. This was the first time in his career he was up for the award. Tom Fusciello at Trinity College was the other nominee in the category.  

“This award is a bigger deal for the University,” Izzo said. “I just oversee the construction program, but this is really the vision of President Petillo and Mike Kinney (vice president for finance and administration). I just execute.”

Izzo has been working at SHU for eight years and has seen its tremendous growth first-hand. Recent building projects have included the Center for Healthcare Education, Toussaint residence hall and JP’s Diner at the new Upper Quad and a new facility for radio station WSHU and the Department of Public Safety.

Izzo said the award is validating—a reminder that he is doing good work at SHU and is fair to the many contractors, subcontractors and other construction professionals with whom he works.

“The AGC chose a worthy recipient for the award,” said Kinney. “Marc has executed the University’s construction projects efficiently and professionally, meeting deadlines and forming great relationships along the way. This is a great achievement for Marc and for SHU.”
