High school students interested in participating in a six-day faith experience this summer at Sacred Heart University should apply now.

For the first time ever, supported by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, SHU and the Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport will collaborate in hosting a summer theology program, “The SHU Journey: To God and the World through the Catholic Intellectual Tradition.” University professors, staff from the diocese and six SHU mentors will lead 24 high school students in in an exploration of faith and self-development on campus this June. The week will consist of small-group conversations, prayer and reflection, keynote speakers, a day trip to The Cloisters Museum, music ministry and community service.

The program will take place on campus, Sunday, June 26 through Friday, July 1, beginning with an opening address by Bishop Frank Caggiano. Students will stay in one of the University’s residence halls. There is no cost associated with the program. Those selected to participate will receive a $500 scholarship.

This program was made possible through a $559,654 grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. and its High School Youth Theology Institute initiative, which seeks to encourage young people to explore their religious beliefs and their concerns about contemporary challenges by studying theology and examining how faith calls them to lives of service.

SHU Journey is for high school students, rising freshmen to rising seniors, who are interested in growing and becoming leaders in faith. The program was developed specifically for young men and women who want to become more knowledgeable, effective, confident and faith-filled leaders in their parishes, schools and communities. Students who are involved in churches, campus ministry, music ministry and community service would benefit from participating in SHU Journey, according to Michelle Loris, chair of the University’s Department of Catholic Studies.

Applications must be in no later than May 1. If a group is applying, each student needs to complete a separate application and note on the form the name of the group with whom they are affiliated.
