SHU Recognized as Top Healthy Workplace for Sixth Consecutive Year

Sacred Heart University is a gold award recipient in the annual Healthy Workplace Employer Recognition Program sponsored by the Business Council of Fairfield County.

The University received recognition for the sixth consecutive year for its outstanding commitment to promoting a healthy work environment for its 1,300 employees, which includes full- and part-time staff, faculty and adjunct professors.

Sacred Heart’s Office of Human Resources launched its Wellness Program in 2007, offering a generous financial wellness incentive for all eligible employees who complete a university-sponsored biometric screening session and an on-line health assessment. Employees also have access to on-site fitness classes; discounts at local fitness centers; and an annual health fair for faculty/staff, students and family members with free flu shots, health screenings, healthy cooking demonstrations and more. These fairs have attracted as many as 250 employees.

Over the past seven years, the Wellness Program also has provided opportunities for employees to participate in educational programs such as Weight Watchers at Work®, weight loss webinars and stress management programs. In addition, there are Lunch & Learn workshops that offer information on nutrition and exercise, provided by SHU’s professors of human movement and sports science.

The SHU Wellness Program also includes a Healthy Coaching segment that encompasses four modules: stress management, weight loss, smoking cessation and heart health. The programs are free and open to all faculty and staff.

Mathew Fair, co-chair of the 2016 Healthy Workplaces Employer Recognition Program, noted the award winners’ focus on employee health. “As I have been involved with this program since its inception, I continue to be impressed with the level of commitment these companies have devoted to wellness within their workplaces,” said Fair, who is first vice president of First Niagara Risk Management, Inc. “Regardless of company size, these honorees have used innovative approaches to not just engage, but to measure the effectiveness of their programs over the long-term.”

Sacred Heart is among 49 honorees this year, presented by the business council’s Wellness Roundtable with the support of First Niagara and UnitedHealthcare of CT, Inc.
