SHU to Launch New Literary Spotlight Reading Series
|Professor Jonas Zdanys|
Sacred Heart University is pleased to announce a new literary reading series that will present authors who are in the early stages of their writing careers. The University extends a welcome invitation to writers to sign up as readers in the new series.
Sacred Heart Literary Spotlight will feature authors who have one or possibly two books published and who are committed to building their careers as poets, novelists, writers of short stories and creators of other literary forms. Authors participating in the Literary Spotlight series will take part in public readings and will engage students in SHU’s creative writing courses. Literary Spotlight events will be held each semester, beginning in the spring, and will feature two or three writers at each event.
The new series has been developed by Jonas Zdanys, professor of English and poet in residence at Sacred Heart. “We’re looking for authors in the early stages of their careers,” said Zdanys, who has been at the University for six years. “Writers often need to have their work audience-tested, but getting invited to give public readings is not always easy for beginning writers. The Spotlight will provide a visible and welcoming setting for such writers. The University – we are known as the Pioneers, after all – wants to encourage writers who are committed to their craft and to building their literary futures.”
Zdanys and Anita August, English professor and director of SHU’s Writing Across the Curriculum Program, will select writers for the series. Zdanys and August teach the University’s creative writing courses.
The Spotlight is part of a growing number of literary events on the Sacred Heart campus throughout the year, including open mic sessions and the Literary Spring readings held each April that feature well-known and established authors.
