Professor Orlowski Honored for Contributions to Economics with Honorary Doctorate from Poland University
A special honor was bestowed upon Lucjan Orlowski, chair of the Department of Economics and Finance and DBA program director at Sacred Heart University, on March 6, when he received the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Wroclaw University of Economics in Wroclaw, Poland. Wroclaw University is among top five best economics universities in Poland. He was the university’s 25th honoree to receive the Honoris Causa doctorate.
Orlowski was recognized as an economist who has made a lasting contribution to the international attainment of economics and finance, particularly with regard to the debate concerning the functioning of the contemporary financial markets and monetary policy. “The academic community of Wroclaw University of Economics is honored to grant this mark of utmost distinction to Professor Orłowski in recognition of his exceptional academic achievements, his remarkable educational skills, his impressive talent in the popularization of economic issues, his active involvement in the proceedings of many international organizations, and, above all, his dedication and invaluable input in the modernization of the Polish economic system,” said the Senate of Wroclaw University of Economics in announcing plans to confer the honorary doctorate on Orlowski.
Orlowski’s academic career began at the University of Economics in Katowice, Poland, where he received a doctorate in international economics in 1979. From 1981 to 1983 he was a visiting Fulbright Professor at New York University Stern Graduate School of Business, where he taught and conducted research in international economics, finance and banking. He came to Sacred Heart University in 1983 and has held several administrative positions there including chair-person of the Department of Financial Studies, acting provost and vice president for Academic Affairs and director of Global Studies.
In receiving the award, Orlowski expressed appreciation to his home country for the honor. “I am greatly honored by this recognition. I accept it with pride and satisfaction, as it is conferred on me by this renowned and dynamically growing university,” he said. “I am also deeply touched to be honored by my countrymen, in my native land of Poland. Moreover, this conferment of the Honoris Causa degree is an affirmation that pursuing an academic career in my favorite field of economics was the right decision.”
