A Message to the Community from President Petillo: Seamus Carey

Seamus Carey

News Story: February 17, 2014

To faculty, staff and students,

The Board of Trustees at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., announced today that our own Seamus Carey, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, will be the college’s 26th president. The selection committee there conducted a national search and chose Seamus from among a number of qualified and prestigious candidates. In my opinion, they have made a terrific choice.

Seamus came to Sacred Heart in July 2010 and has had a great impact on the University in that time. Among his many accomplishments is the development of the First-Year seminar and the SHUsquare website that complements the seminar program. He has been an articulate proponent of the value of a liberal arts education and led the effort to reevaluate the Common Core. He regularly interacts with students, particularly by blogging on the SHUsquare site.

Seamus has my heartfelt thanks and sincere congratulations. Transylvania’s gain is most certainly our loss, but Seamus has certainly prepared himself well to become a university president. I have no doubt that we will be hearing of his success for many years to come. Please join me in thanking Seamus for the difference he has made at Sacred Heart and in wishing him all the best in his future endeavors.
