Annual Scholarship Gala to Honor Charles V. Firlotte

Charles V. Firlotte

News Story: February 14, 2013

Sacred Heart University will host its 24th Annual Discovery Awards and Scholarship Gala on Saturday, April 6, on campus at the Linda E. McMahon Commons. It will be a memorable evening, with the Commons transformed with elements reminiscent of The Phantom of the Opera. The Gala will be followed by a performance by The Three Phantoms – tenors who have played the role of the phantom on Broadway.

The gala honors notable individuals while raising funds for SHU’s scholarship programs. This year’s honoree is Charles V. Firlotte, president and CEO of Aquarion Water Company. Firlotte was appointed president and chief executive officer of Aquarion in September 2003. With a background in human resources management, he developed a reputation as an agent of change and turnaround specialist, with a focus on enhancement to operating efficiencies and service delivery. Under his leadership, Aquarion has earned awards and acknowledgments including the Connecticut Improvement Quality Award, the state equivalent of the prestigious national Baldrige Award, and the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Award for reduction of carbon footprint. He holds an undergraduate degree from St. Thomas University in New Brunswick, Canada, a master’s degree in social sciences from the University of Ottawa and is a graduate of Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program. Firlotte is past chairman of the board for the Bridgeport Regional Business Council. He currently serves on the board of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association (CBIA) and is a board member of his alma mater,  St. Thomas University in Eastern Canada.

SHU’s Discovery Gala invites the community to recognize and celebrate the gifts of caring and accomplished people — those who embody the tradition of the University in their lives. Over the years, honorees have represented a wide diversity of professions but hold in common a passion for excellence and a devotion to their fellow citizens. Each is truly an educator showing by example the inestimable value of learning, leadership and service.

The gala event begins with a cocktail and dinner reception at 6 p.m., followed by The Three Phantoms musical performance at 8 in the Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts.

Over the past two decades, the Discovery Gala has realized millions of dollars for student financial aid.

Sponsorship opportunities are available. Individual tickets are $500. All proceeds will benefit Sacred Heart University’s scholarship funds. Visit the Discovery Gala website for additional information.
