Three Sacred Heart University students have been selected to play with the 2013 New England College Band Association Inter-Collegiate Band. Keith Johnston, director of bands at Sacred Heart University, reports that Lora Streett (clarinet), Nate Tallo (bass clarinet) and Mike Tomanelli (tuba) will all travel to Gordon College April 12-13 for rehearsals and a concert. This year’s guest conductor will be T. Andre Feagin from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Tomanelli, a freshman from Malboro, N.Y., believes the selection is more about the quality of the program than an individual award. “It means a lot knowing that the hard work that we, the SHU band program, put in during the course of the year is being appreciated throughout the Northeast,” he said.

Three band members selected from SHU is the most ever in Johnston’s tenure as band director. “It’s an honor to represent Sacred Heart University at this prestigious event,” Tomanelli added. “I know the selections will gain us some credit as a program in the eyes of the other schools participating.”

The New England College Band Association is made up of representatives from colleges and universities in the six-state region. It connects band directors and programs across New England while sponsoring annual band festivals at the collegiate level. Selection to the New England College Band Association Inter-Collegiate band provides students with the opportunity to perform with the finest college ensemble in the Northeast.
