SHU's 'First' Students Plan Mixer-Style Reunion

News Story: September 1, 2011

Students from Sacred Heart University’s inaugural classes are making plans to get together and reminisce about their shared college experiences. A reunion of Sacred Heart’s classes of 1967-1979 will take place on Saturday, October 29, on campus in University Commons. The brainchild of Joe Marrone ’74, and a small committee of early alumni, the event will be an old-fashioned mixer.

“We thought the word mixer would bring back fond memories of Sacred Heart. We had a lot of fun at mixers when we were all there,” Marrone said. The reunion site will accommodate 200 people, and Marrone is hoping that many folks will want to come. He encourages alumni to check out the page dedicated to the reunion event on Facebook.

“I’m excited. We’ve already heard that people are making plans to travel from out of state to get here, and we have a representative from the original class of 1967,” Marrone said. “Sacred Heart has changed a lot since it was the commuter school that we all attended. I want other alumni to have a chance to see the stunning transformation that has taken place. The library is different, and there’s the beautiful new Chapel of the Holy Spirit and the modern Student Commons which is under construction right now.”

He pointed out that since Sacred Heart was a commuter school, many alumni are still in the area and have maintained close friendships. “I hope everyone will come and will spread the word to others they are in touch with. We were the foundation of Sacred Heart – a University that has now become one of the best schools in the country. I still get a very special feeling whenever I walk on Sacred Heart’s campus,” he said.

Patty Gallagher Boyne, ’75, another member of the committee, also has fond memories of her years as a student at Sacred Heart.  “I probably would have been lost in the sauce at a bigger school. Although it wasn’t what I thought I wanted at the time, Sacred Heart turned out to be the perfect place for me,” she said. “It was a tough time for the country with the Vietnam War and protests on campuses, but at Sacred Heart, we had the chance to set the tone for the kind of school it has become today.”

Judy Ann Stevens, ’80, is looking forward to seeing former classmates. “We’re older now; our kids are grown. Many of us have reconnected on Facebook, and it will be fun to get together and catch up. We all got a great education and made good friends, and some of us have lost touch. It will be a great opportunity to have a wonderful evening with old friends,” she said.

Marrone said the committee is still working on final details for the event, but the hope is to keep tickets at $35-$40 a person with a cash bar. “We know these are tough economic times, and we don’t want to prohibit anyone from joining in on the fun,” he said.
