SHU's University College to Launch 'ESL Radio Hour' on Radio Cumbre

News Story: November 1, 2010

The ESL Radio Hour will premier this Sunday, November 21st, at 12 noon on Radio Cumbre (1450 AM), in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Produced as a public service by the English Language Institute at Sacred Heart University’s University College, in conjunction with Radio Cumbre, the monthly program will use a number of formats to share the value of learning English as a second language for the adult community.

Radio Cumbre is a 24-hour Spanish language station broadcasting from Stamford to New Haven. The English Language Hour, which will run 12 times a year, will feature interviews with teachers and other professionals at Sacred Heart on subjects related to seasonal celebrations and other current events. This month, for example, Dr. Charlotte Gradie, chair of the History Department, will speak about Thanksgiving customs, and next month, the theme will be Christmas.

Each segment will include recorded excerpts from ESL classes at Sacred Heart as well as the narration of a story that listeners are encouraged to follow in printed form that is available from the University website. The program was the brainchild of Madeleine Monaghan, director of the English Language Institute at SHU, and Jon DeBenedictis, recruiter/adviser for University College.

According to Mrs. Monaghan, “the English language Hour is an effort unprecedented in our area for the Hispanic community. English language skills are vital for people in their social, professional and academic lives, and we want them to know that there are resources available to assist them.”
