News Story: September 7, 2008

Father James Martin, S.J., associate editor of the national Catholic weekly, America, and the author of numerous books, will discuss “Laughing with the Saints: Joy, Humor and Laughter in the Spiritual Life” at Sacred Heart University. His address on Tuesday, September 23, will take place at 7:30 P.M. in University Commons in the Main Academic Building. It is free and open to the public.

A member of the Society of Jesus – the Jesuits – since 1988, Father Martin is the author of My Life with the Saints. Now available in paperback, this volume is both biography and memoir. It explores the lives of holy men and women and their influence on the author. While most are familiar, they include the canonized, such as Saints Peter and Ignatius Loyola, the not-yet-canonized, such as Mother Theresa and Pope John XXIII, and others who have been recognized for their sanctity and exemplary lives, such as Thomas Merton and Dorothy Day.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, Father Martin worked in corporate finance and human resources at GE for six years before entering religious life. The recipient of master’s degrees in divinity and theology, he was ordained in 1999. His ministries have included work in Jamaica, New York City and Kenya. Earlier books have included Searching for God at Ground Zero and In Good Company: The Fast Track from the Corporate World to Poverty, Chastity and Obedience. Media appearances have ranged from National Public Radio to The O’Reilly Factor.

My Life with the Saints received the 2006 Christopher Award and was named a Best Book of 2006 by Publisher’s Weekly.
