Over 1,000 Alumni, Students and Friends of SHU Celebrate Homecoming
Well over 1,000 alumni and friends visited Sacred Heart University for Homecoming ’07 on Saturday, September 22, celebrating the spirit of the SHU community with a tailgate party, awards brunch, parade and a Pioneer football game.
The day began with the Alumni Tent and tailgating party in the faculty/staff parking lot. A pre-game Homecoming parade livened-up the already festive atmosphere with creatively decorated floats and costumes from various student organizations.
The Alumni Awards Brunch, attended by more than 90 people in University Commons, recognized graduates who have made a difference in their industries and communities and have had a positive impact on individual lives, as well as on their alma mater. Awardees included Richard P. Cercone ’01 and Linda B. Melodia ’04 (College of Education and Health Professions Alumni Leadership Award); Anthony Maida, Dr. Michael Redler and Katherine Yacavone (Community Partner Award); Michael Del Re, Jr. ’68 (University College Alumni Leadership Award); John Benvenuto ’78, Donald J. Kinahan ’85, Floyd Neil ’98 and Olia Yelner ’05 (Pioneer Award); Chad Betz ’90 (Volunteer of the Year Award); and Alice Ferreira ’91 (Alumni Achievement Award).
On the gridiron at Campus Field, the SHU football team treated the Homecoming crowd to an exciting afternoon game against Duquesne University. Though the Pioneers lost, senior safety John Wilson provided memorable fireworks when he returned a blocked punt for a touchdown to tie the score in the fourth quarter, forcing the game to overtime. Duquesne eventually won 30-23 in front of 3,356 fans.
